In March last year, a presentation of the Renault Kaptur compact crossover, developed specifically for the Russian market, took place at the Technopolis Moscow congress center. Unlike the “Captur” sold in Europe, the car is based on the tried and tested Renault Duster “bogie”, and not on the short-travel “bogie” of the latest generation of the “Clio” hatchback, which is completely unsuitable for Russian realities.

Moreover, Renault Kaptur 2 received a slightly redesigned exterior, as well as a "filling" adapted for domestic roads, including four-wheel drive, increased ground clearance and a high-torque 2-liter 143-horsepower petrol engine.

Despite the fact that a 1.6-liter gasoline engine is also presented in Russia, the 2-liter engine is of the greatest interest, since only with it the car can be equipped with a plug-in all-wheel drive, which allows you to feel much more confident when driving on ice and off-road conditions.

Appearance Renault Kaptur

The exterior of Renault Kaptur is made in the style of the latest models of the brand, thanks to which the crossover looks not only stylish, beautiful and modern, but also is perceived as a kind of "strong man", ready to rush into battle at any time.

The front part of the car pleases the eye with expressive optics of the main light, a branded radiator grill with a large Renault emblem in the center, as well as an original bumper with C-shaped LEDs for running lights, most of which is occupied by a large air intake.

The taut profile is highlighted by a slightly sloping roofline, a billowing window line to the stern, and inflated wheel arches that can house 16- or 17-inch rollers. The well-tailored rear has stylish LED marker lights, a large tailgate and a massive rear bumper.

Compared to the European version, the Russian Renault Kaptur is noticeably larger:

  • Length - 4.333 m;
  • Width - 1.813 m;
  • Height - 1.613 m;
  • Distance between axles - 2.674 m.

For comparison, the dimensions of Renault Captur are: 4.121 x 1.957 x 1.579 m. Moreover, the modification presented here has a more impressive ground clearance - 205 mm versus 170 mm, which is so necessary in the conditions of domestic roads.

The choice of future owners is offered in 7 basic and over 10 combined body colors, which, together with a wide selection of roller designs, opens up the broadest possibilities for personalizing the exterior.

Renault Captur Salon 2017

Compared to the stylish and attractive exterior, the Kaptur's interior design disappoints slightly with its simplicity and quality of materials used, which are only slightly better than those of the budget Duster. In front of the driver there is an original and stylish dashboard borrowed from the Clio, as well as a less stylish steering wheel in comparison with the "European", which is also devoid of longitudinal adjustment. In the central part of the dashboard there is a MediaNav multimedia system with a 7 ”touchscreen, familiar from the latest generation of Renault Logan. Slightly below there is an unusual-shaped microclimate control unit, which can be used without much difficulty almost without looking.

The increased dimensions of the Russian version of the crossover had a positive effect on the amount of free space in the cabin, which can easily accommodate 5 adult passengers. The front seats are objectively more comfortable than those of the Duster, and they please with the presence of a wide range of adjustments. The rear sofa can accommodate three, although tall riders may feel a little uncomfortable here, which is due to the sloping roofline, which is about to bury your head. The volume of the trunk in the stowed state and with the rear sofa unfolded is 367 and 1200 liters, respectively. On the one hand, this is not much, but on the other, it is noticeably more than in the Nissan Juke, while the folded rear seats form a flat floor, which makes it easy to transport oversized cargo.

Note that for the all-wheel drive version, the manufacturer offers a stowaway (located in the underground luggage compartment), but the front-wheel drive version is equipped with a full-fledged spare wheel, which, however, is fixed "overboard" of the crossover.

Engine and transmission Renault Kaptur 2017

As mentioned earlier, we have a 2-liter Renault Kaptur in our review, equipped with a proprietary plug-in all-wheel drive system and a 6-level manual gearbox that provides a races from 0 to 100 in 10.5 seconds and allows you to reach a threshold of 206 km / h. A similar engine, but with a 4-level automatic transmission, accelerates the car to "hundreds" in 11.2 seconds, while the maximum speed is noticeably lower - 185 km / h.

Special attention should be paid to the fuel consumption indicator, which in our sample was about 8 l / 100 km in mixed driving mode. Fuel consumption for a car with an automatic "box" is predictably higher and varies within the range of 8.9-9.2 liters for every 100 km of distance traveled.

The first two gears differ in a small gear ratio, which, on the one hand, is good for off-road, and on the other hand, does not allow the full potential of the 143-horsepower turbo engine to be unleashed on a straight line. At the same time, in the city, the car allows you to get under way even from the second gear, and when driving at speeds up to 60 km / h there is always a sufficient supply of traction under the gas pedal. The perfectly tuned clutch, which will especially appeal to novice car enthusiasts, did not disappoint either.

As a result, the 2-liter 143-horsepower petrol engine, though not very agile, will more than satisfy the needs of most potential buyers. Moreover, this engine has proven itself well in terms of reliability and unpretentiousness in maintenance, and if it were not for the relatively high fuel consumption, then it could well claim to be one of the best in its price segment.

Off-road capabilities and handling of the Renault Kaptur 2017

Despite the fact that the crossover has an impressive ground clearance (205 mm), good geometric cross-country ability (exit angle - 31 degrees, entry angle - 30 degrees) and an intelligent plug-in all-wheel drive system, you should not meddle on serious off-road terrain.

His destiny is a broken country road, which the car storms with enviable playfulness, confidently smoothing out irregularities and large potholes, as well as not annoying the driver and passengers with excessive body swing.

This was achieved through a significant upgrade of the suspension, in which they installed new levers and reinforced subframes, reconfigured the behavior of the shock absorbers and springs, and also made the bushings of the rear stabilizer mounts less pliable.

In comparison with the Duster, a step forward was made in the steering settings, which became not only more informative and accurate, but also began to transmit fewer hits to the steering wheel, which had a positive effect on the overall level of comfort.

Renault Kaptur 2017- configuration and price

The minimum price for the new Renault Kaptur with a 2-liter petrol engine and a manual transmission starts at 1.074 million rubles. - new Renault Kaptur "Drive" trim, offering the following equipment package:

  • Interior fabric upholstery;
  • Cruise control;
  • On-board computer;
  • Motor start button;
  • Air conditioner;
  • Heated rear window and first row seats;
  • Full power accessories;
  • Remote controlled central locking;
  • Heated and electrically adjustable side mirrors;
  • ESP, HSA and ABS system;
  • Front airbags;
  • The system responsible for the distribution of braking forces;
  • Audio system;
  • Leather steering wheel;
  • Safety belts and ISOFIX anchorages.

The price of the new Renault Kaptur with a similar engine and gearbox, but in the "Style" configuration, is 1.144 million rubles, while the list of equipment is supplemented with:

  • 17 "light-alloy" rollers ";
  • Advanced multimedia system with 6 speakers;
  • Rain and light sensors;
  • Climate control;
  • Heated windshield;
  • Back view camera and parking sensors;
  • Fog lights;
  • Two-tone body paint;
  • Tinted rear windows.

If the buyer plans to install an automatic transmission on the crossover, he will additionally have to part with 50 thousand rubles, but we would strongly recommend giving preference to the combination of a 2-liter engine and a mechanic.

Summing up

Renault Kaptur pleased with the presence of a stylish and modern appearance, good geometric cross-country ability and a reliable, but somewhat sluggish 2-liter gasoline engine, a pair of which can be either a 6-level "mechanics" or a 4-level "automatic". I was a little upset by the quality of the plastic in the cabin, but I was pleased with the spaciousness and the list of the basic equipment of the car.

Despite a number of minor flaws, the car has no direct competitors on the market that could boast of the same stylish and dynamic appearance, as well as an equally "omnivorous" and reliable suspension.
